- A park that will serve the community and attract people to the town of Winter Park.
- A unique park that provides winter sports opportunities for Grand County youth.
- A park that continues the tradition of Nordic ski jumping, that began in our community in 1940 and provides coaching opportunities for our young skiers in this growing sport.

The preferred long-term solution involves rebuilding the jumps approximately 1.5 miles north of the base area, just south of the Town of Winter Park, in an area known as Tunnel Hill. Our vision for Tunnel Hill is to build a permanent facility for Nordic training and competitive ski jumping.
IWe have included the footprint of the proposed Nordic ski-jump facility. We envision Tunnel Hill will have several jumps up to a K120 facility. This development will occur in two phases to accommodate program growth and athlete development.
We envision Phase 1 will include the four small jump hills up to the K70. This facility would be served by the relocated handcart lift (slated to be donated and relocated by the ski area. Under Phase 2, we will construct the K90 and K120 (Olympic sized hills) that will include a poma/platter surface lift.
The Tunnel Hill site was selected as the most suitable site area within the Winter Park. Ski Area Forest Service Permit Area based on the following criteria:
- Slope angle and orientation;
- Proximity to population and accessibility by local transportation;
- Ease of access for participating youth;
- Approval by Intrawest Inc.
- Would be the ideal location to permanently relocate the jumps;
- Could also serve to handle the local traffic using the cross country trails in the area;
- Would be valued as a park for the Town;
- The slope gradients match current jump hill design specifications and thus minimize site work and preclude the need for inrun scaffolding.
- Is within the Forest Service Permit area;
- Is within the Town’s boundary;
- Has existing electrical infrastructure near the site;
- Has been discussed in the past as an idea location for a Town Park;
- Would allow Nordic competition activities formerly occurring at Sorensen Park to occur outside the base area;
- Could be used as a training facility (year round) for the US ski team and other groups traveling to Winter Park and requiring lodging at IW properties as well.
- Would qualify the area to host competitions including national and international events, raising the world-wide exposure of the resort and community.
Several access options exist the most economical and efficient being along Arapaho Road. With minimal grading work, the current road could be improved to the base of the site to accommodate a small parking area, eliminating the shuttle traffic on Arapahoe Road. Also parking could utilize the Town garage in Cooper Square, with shuttle or bus services to jumps.
During the winter and summer months, this parking area at Tunnel Hill would eliminate vehicles parking at the end of Arapahoe Road, by people wishing to access the Forest Service trails in this area for hiking or cross country skiing. Final site selection and approval will depend on the next phase of environmental, engineering and construction feasibility. |
