Ski Jumps at Winter Park Ski Area
|
The ski-jumping program has a 65-year tradition of teaching the values of ski-jumping to recreational and elite level skiers. The Jumping program was started on January 28, 1940 . It has produced thousands of skiers who value the sport of ski-jumping and return to Winter Park because of its rich history and values. It has served the community by providing valuable training for high school, collegiate, and Olympic level athletes. It is the home of numerous world-class ski-jumpers for the U.S. Ski Team and the Olympic Team, including Todd Scholl, Scott Clayton, Landis Arnold, Zane Palmer, Dennis McGrane, Todd Wilson, Bob Holme, Greg Boester and Ryan Heckman. It has been a focus of Colorado Ski Hall of Fame inductees Harold ”Pop” Sorensen, Gerry and Thor Groswald, Crosby Perry-Smith, and Frank Penney (2003 inductee).
The jumps at Winter Park served hundreds of young ski-jumpers each weekend at the area. Approximately 50 to 100 kids participated each week including those from Competition Center programs of the “Sharks, Piranhas" as well as the "Eskimos Ski Club” participants.
By building a new facility in the Winter Park community we look foward to renewing this wonderful tradition, enhancing the community, and taking our place again in the international community of elite ski jumping clubs.
